Focus Your Energy Like a Laser Beam

November 8th, 2009

Are you one of those people that has several projects on the go and wonders why none of them are coming to fruition very quickly?  Maybe you’re spreading your focus too thinly.  Multi tasking can be helpful in some situations but it can also be counter-productive.

A great analogy of this is the effects of the sun’s rays.  As it is dispersed in many directions from its source in the sky, its strength is weakened to such an extent that we can survive under it quite happily.  But, if you take those same rays and direct them through a magnifying glass, that extra focus can fry an insect or start a fire in a pile of leaves.  (Of course I’m not suggesting that you actually do this!)  This is the power of focus.

Maybe it’s time to think about where your energy is going.  Is it focussed on your most important priorities?  Maybe you would benefit from limiting the projects you have on the go so the energy you have is enough to get the important ones completed? By simplifying and prioritising where you want to spend your energy, you can then focus like a laser beam.  You’ll be amazed at the quantum leap in results.

Most people have heard about the 80/20 rule.  (Some even extend this to a 90/10 ratio.)  Generally it is believed that in both business and our day to day lives, we spend 80% of our time and energy on activity that provides only 20% of our return.  This is also true in reverse, so we are only spending 20% of our time and effort on the most rewarding and productive activities.  Imagine what would happen then, if we turn this on its head and spend 80% of our time on the important stuff – what a huge shift in output that would create!

Another thing to remember in terms of your focus is to always focus on what you want, NOT what you don’t want.  Your mind is very powerful, and your thoughts create your experiences. You will create what you focus the majority of your thoughts and energy on, so you want it to be the right thing!  Focussing on things you don’t want, such as worries and fears, can actually help to make them happen, because that is what your laser beam is directing all your energy into.  Choose the priorities you want for yourself and then focus your very own laser beam to make them happen!
