How to Achieve those Big Goals this Year!

January 15th, 2010

Have you set yourself some really big goals this year? Something you really want to achieve, but have no idea how yet? Is there a danger it might end up going in the “too-hard” basket and ending up back on the New Year’s resolution list again next year?

If you had to eat an elephant, how would you do it? (I’m not sure why you would want to, but humour me and consider it anyway!) Whichever way you look at it, the most logical way is to cut it into steaks and then slowly chew it mouthful by mouthful.

It’s so easy to get put off doing something because it simply seems too big, and therefore too scary and too daunting. Too big may also mean too time consuming and/or too expensive. So how do big projects get done? How do some people achieve mammoth feats while others struggle to cope with the normal everyday stuff?

The secret is actually very simple. Any big project, no matter how huge it may be, can be broken into smaller chunks, just like elephant steaks. And you can keep breaking the chunks into smaller and smaller bite size pieces, until it is easily doable. This is how people write books, run marathons, make millions, and conquer the world – one step at a time!

So let 2010 be the year you achieve your big goals. First break your goal down into smaller chunks so that it is more manageable. Set mini-goals, within your overall goal, so you can celebrate your success along the way. Then break the first chunk into even smaller steps, so that it’s easy to get started. Once you’ve made a start with the first step, keep moving. Each little step is a step closer to your big goal being completed. Go for it!
